Sauron the Necromancer by BrokenMachine86 Sauron the Necromancer by BrokenMachine86
:icondonotuseplz::iconmyartplz:

During the Third Age, after the One Ring was lost, a shadow fell on the southern part of Mirkwood. It was Sauron, the Necromancer of Dol Guldur.

Because it was thought at first that he was one of the Nazgûl, I tried to make him look alike.

Technique: graphite pencil.

---------------------------------------------------

What's totally lost on the films (though I guess the Hobbit is making up for that somewhat) is that Sauron DID in fact rebuild his body but lost a tremendous amount of his power with the loss of the ring. When he reshaped himself he became the Necromancer where he was attempting to recreate the power of the ring because he himself thought it lost for eternity. Even by the LOTR books it was hinted he had a shadow form that sat in the Dark Tower and used his power to create an all seeing eye (for fat lot of good it did him haha).
Anyway this is a great rendition

Hah! That's the same exact line of thought I had. They thought he was a Nazgul so he probably looked a bit like one. Apparently Games Workshop felt the same.

People also like to call Peter Jackson's portrayal of Sauron as an eye wrong, which I don't think is exactly an accurate statement. Sauron's a being of great power, and the eye is a manifestation of his power and an extension of his will; so as much as he did continue to utilize the form here, more or less, the Eye was like a third eye, or a palantir that was actually part of him. So he was both the Eye AND the guy inside who tortured Gollum.

He's Sauron, even without the Ring he's still a badass who can do what he wants. :P

Fantastic job on the armor, and I love your style with those tree branches! I really hope they cover some of this time in The Hobbit, and it looks like they may. :)

Ok, now this is awesome. The period of Sauron's history that intrigues me the most is his time as the Necromancer. At first it confused me, it I found out that the "Eye Of Sauron" was a different concept in the books then it was in the movies. I'd also like to know why he was "the Necromancer", did he actually have some ability to control the dead? And also, supposedly the White Counsel, the five Wizards and the other wise and powerful of Middle-Earth, drove him out. What occurred in this confrontation? I hope, at least a version of the story, is shown in the up coming Hobbit movies.

Well, I know they are expanding on the book and showing what Gandalf did away from Bilbo, so it is possible Sauron will put in an appearance.

Sounds great, though they need to be careful how they show this confrontation. According to Tolkien, the wizards were forbidden by the Valar to directly fight Sauron, but rather teach the people of Middle-Earth to do so themselves. Teach a man to fish sort of thing. There's also the possibility of considerable destructive fallout if they'd done so, A battle between Maiar, even five vs. one, could have more or less destroyed a chunk of Middle-Earth. Anyways, its important that Jackson and crew stay true to this in the Hobbit.

Well, at least a confrontation of sorts. Be it verbal or just something, ya know?

As for Jackson, you never know. He was this close to putting in a Sauron and Aragorn sword fight in ROTK.

Aye, which admittedly would have been cool. Oddly, having done so would have broken one overall rule of LotR, and fixed another. You see, the Eye of Sauron was supposed to be metaphoric, not his actual form. He still had, or rather, had reformed his body. Gollum himself states that he'd seem Sauron, and mentions the missing finger.

Yeah, there's a good chance we may not see Sauron as the Necromancer just because of the fact that in LotR, being Sauron's form as the Eye in the movies.

Unless Jackson uses the magic word "retcon"

Straight out retcon, no. He's not going to take that risk. And lets be honest, Jackson DOES try to be true to the source material. Books and Movies are just a very different from of storytelling, more so then many realize. That said, he could be subtle about it. He could say that The Necromancer was Sauron successfully achieving a physical form, and following its defeat Sauron returned to a default form, being the Eye. Of course there is then the problem which I've already stated, in that the Wizards could not fight Sauron directly, in the books Sauron was simply driven out of the areas he'd set shop in. So it would be a stretch for him to be defeated in such a manner that would necessitate the loss of his physical form.

But then again, he did abandon it in the books...I think. I'll have to do a bit of research, refresh my memory on this.

Well, judging from the trailers, Jackson is adding more fight scenes to the film. Ya never know. Would you really be offended if, say, Gandalf fought the Necromancer one-on-one?

Excellent work yet again! I'm loving the armour here (mostly because I cannot draw armour myself) and the wicked trees in the background. I've never thought of Sauron taking the shape of a Nazgul-like creature; I always imagined him as a shadow in Dol Guldur instead, just a malevolent, invisible spirit in Mirkwood. This is an interesting concept.
